Communities bring meaning, connection and a sense of belonging to our lives. Conversely, a lack of community contributes to the current 'epidemic of loneliness'. The Covid era highlighted both the value and the absence of community, and left many of us wanting more.
Many people feel called to found or contribute to communities. Others seek them out as members. But it’s not always that simple: it takes time and effort to found or participate, and sometimes it's hard to know where to begin.
Designing Communities is intended to help, by sharing proven & practical approaches to weaving community. It's an action research project to gather stories of success and failure in community building, distil the commonalities, and share them with others. In particular, it aims to increase the design world's focus on 'community' as a solution space.
Do you have a story, or lessons learned from building community? Are you interested in collaborating, or trying out one of the community-building patterns we're mapping?
